Description
Red Label 35/40 SMILE Combi Filter
Professional Drum Filtration for Large Koi Ponds
A koi pond is a precision-managed aquatic environment where water quality, biological stability, and hydraulic performance directly affect fish health and long-term system reliability. To maintain optimal conditions in larger koi ponds, a high-capacity, automated filtration solution is essential. The Red Label 35/40 SMILE Combi Filter delivers advanced mechanical separation, high-volume biological filtration, and integrated ultraviolet treatment in one compact, serviceable platform.
High-Throughput Efficiency for Clear, Stable Koi Water
In high-volume koi ponds, filtration efficiency is paramount. The SMILE 35/40 is engineered to maintain consistent water clarity and stable parameters under continuous load, combining fine drum filtration with substantial biological media capacity and a built-in UVC Clarifier.
Integrated Flushing Pump and Drum Controller for Reduced Maintenance
The SMILE 35/40 incorporates an internal flushing system with an integrated drum controller to automate cleaning cycles and optimise waste removal. This reduces manual maintenance, supports long-term reliability, and ensures consistent mechanical performance during continuous operation.
Built-In 80-Watt H-O Amalgam UVC Clarifier
Fitted as standard with a built-in 80-watt H-O amalgam UVC Clarifier, the SMILE 35/40 is designed to suppress algae, bacteria, and waterborne pathogens. Integrating ultraviolet treatment directly into the filtration process maintains optimal flow and eliminates the need for separate UV equipment in the pipework.
Patented Drum Seal and Double Brush Cleaning System
As with all Red Label drum filters, the SMILE 35/40 features the patented drum sealing system. A UV-protected sealing cap helps prevent ultraviolet degradation and supports extended service life. The double brush cleaning system keeps the waste discharge chute clear, supporting consistent performance and reducing routine maintenance requirements.
Ideal for Large Koi Ponds
With a maximum flow rate of 40,000 litres per hour (8,800 UK gallons per hour), the SMILE 35/40 is suitable for ponds up to 80,000 litres (17,600 UK gallons) and koi ponds up to 40,000 litres (8,800 UK gallons)—making it a professional choice for large-scale koi installations.
High-Capacity Filter Media Included
The Red Label 35/40 SMILE Combi Filter is supplied with 3 m² of Red-X cassette filter mats and 200 litres of Hel-X biocarrier media, supporting immediate commissioning and comprehensive mechanical and biological filtration from day one.
Next-Generation Filtration for Large Koi Systems
The SMILE 35/40 builds on the proven Red Label platform with increased capacity for larger ponds, including a larger drum diameter and higher-output ultraviolet treatment. The result is a professional-grade filtration solution designed to maintain stable water quality with minimal intervention.
Available in Gravity-Fed and Pump-Fed Versions
The Red Label 35/40 SMILE Combi Filter is available in both gravity-fed and pump-fed versions, allowing installers and koi keepers to select the most appropriate configuration for new builds, raised ponds, retrofits, and filter pit installations.

Gravity vs Pump-Fed
Gravity-Fed vs Pump-Fed Model Comparison
| Feature | Gravity-Fed Version | Pump-Fed Version |
|---|---|---|
| Installation Method | Installed at pond water level; water flows naturally into the filter by gravity | Installed above or away from pond level; water is delivered to the filter via an external pump |
| Energy Efficiency | High efficiency due to reduced main circulation pumping | Dependent on external pump power and system head height |
| Hydraulic Stability | Provides stable, constant flow with minimal head loss | Flow rate regulated by pump selection and installation layout |
| Noise Profile | Very low | Moderate, dependent on external pump type |
| Maintenance Access | Typically installed in a filter pit for discreet, professional installations | Flexible placement for easier access in above-ground setups |
| Recommended Applications | Permanent, high-end koi pond builds and professional installations | Raised ponds, retrofits, and sites where gravity flow is not practical |
